Ferla, declared Italy’s 4th most virtuous municipality in 2018, is today a town at the forefront of ecotourism thanks to the sustainable architecture it has developed.

In 2014, the Ecostation was established: a building renovated with an eco-sustainable approach by architects Marco Tripi and Emanuela Cifali as one of the first municipal centers for high-quality recycling. Inside, the furniture is made of recycled materials, including a chandelier crafted from ricotta cheese “vasciedde” (traditional baskets).

Citizens bring materials here such as glass, plastic, paper, cardboard, and aluminum, as well as waste oils, small WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment), batteries, and expired medicines.

The waste is weighed, and citizens receive a discount on their utility bills based on the amount recycled.

In 2015, the Compost House was created: a wooden structure designed as a large composter to transform organic waste into compost.

In 2017, a second house was added, creating the “Compost Village,” which also includes neighborhood composters.

The initiative received a special mention from Legambiente in December 2017. The goal of the Compost Village is to reduce waste beyond mere recycling.
